My Therapeutic Approach


EMDR

EMDR (Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a trauma therapy that aims to reduce distress and assist in managing overwhelming emotions associated with traumatic memories. EMDR utilizes bilateral stimulation (BLS) via eye-movements, tapping or audio to reprocess and rewire memory networks to bring about an adaptive resolution. Solution- Focused

Solution-Focused Therapy is goal oriented that utilizes the client's own skills and abilities to reach their desired goals.


Psychodynamic

Psychodynamic approach focuses on early childhood experiences. It is based on attachments that we have formed early that mirror our adult relationships today. By understanding our past, we learn more about who we are, our behaviors, our reactions, and detrimental patterns that can cycle.


Mind-Body Approach

I believe that it is important to treat the individual as a whole. While working on mental health, it is important to notice what is happening in your body at the same time. our minds can often overpower our body.


Anger Empowerment

According to a Google search, the definition of anger is an emotion characterized by hostility toward someone or something you feel has deliberately done you wrong. Anger is a normal emotion just as is happiness, sadness, etc. Too often, society and especially being raised in a home filled with trauma, we learn anger is not okay and that we are a “bad” person if we simply feel anger, whether it’s expressed or not. There may be spoken or unspoken rules regarding anger such as “only mom is allowed to be angry” or “only men are allowed to be angry” or perhaps even “I am a bad person because I feel angry.” Anger is the emotion, aggression is the behavior. Aggression may involve yelling, hitting, throwing things , etc. Aggression is not okay. Anger is okay. 


When working with trauma and anger, it is imperative to access the anger in a safe and contained environment such as therapy. It’s possible to learn what anger is, normalize it, create boundaries, and express it in a productive manner. Anger that is not expressed, turns inwards, which eventually turns into depression. 


On the other hand, maybe you’re thinking “well my anger is explosive” and want to “get rid of it”. This can happen if anger becomes bottled up and “explodes” like a volcano or if anger was learned because it was the only way the family communicated, and a way to get needs met. Luckily for you, you’re able to communicate your anger. The next step would be finding ways to communicate ways to be heard. The louder the tone does not mean the more someone will hear you. Anger is a good thing. It can spark change in the world, and when communicated effectively, can get needs met.
